How big is the market?

Betting Exchanges are relatively new, and it is only in the last couple of years where market leaders Betfair have substantially started to increase their revenues. Conservatively, bets of at least US$5 Billion were matched during 2003, the majority coming from European punters.

Recent estimations by the Media & Entertainment Consulting Network, show the total volume of matched bets in Europe rising to US$160 Billion by 2008 - an estimated compound annual growth rate of 79%.

While these figures may be a little optimistic, the possibility of growth in regions such as Australia, the USA and Asia (where betting exchanges currently have very little penetration) is significant.
